It all started almost 60 years ago when my grandma en grandpa was in grade 8. They grew up together in a small town at the foot of the mountain and went to school together. They started dating that year. Soon things got serious and after Gr.12 my grandpa proposed and she said YES! It was apparently the wedding of the year and they were a couple loved by all the community. They build a house overlooking the mountain with a porch they enjoyed while watching every sunset, and OH the sunsets are so beautiful in South Africa.
Years past and they raised three successful children and many grandchildren… (we are my Nanna’s pride and joy)!
Two years ago my grandpa got seriously ill, none of the doctors could tell us what has happened to cause him to get sick so rapidly to the point that he didn’t recognize anyone anymore, couldn’t speak, couldn’t eat…basically a vegetable. My Nanna was heartbroken. The love of her life (her ONLY love) doesn’t know her anymore and it became clear he would never again sleep at home again or take a walk with her or watch the sunset with her again…
He’s still in hospital to this day.
Miracles have happened though… He started eating again (we have to feed him, but at least he can chew and swallow again), it doesn’t seem like he has any pain anymore, and even though he is still very delusional and can’t communicate, he seems happy in his own imaginary world.
This Christmas (as is our family tradition) the whole family got together on the farm after church. This year we went to visit Oupie (grandpa) in the hospital before we left. We brought him gifts and sweets and he lit up like a child. Saying goodbye was one of the most emotional moments of my life. This was the first Christmas we would have to spend without Oupie and it didn’t seem right. Tears were flowing everywhere. My nana kissed and hug him, tears streaming down her cheeks when she said goodbye to her husband as she was about to spend her first Christmas without him in almost 60 years…
BUT the biggest surprise in nana’s life were to follow…
When she left the hospital and made her way to the farm, we made arrangement with the hospital to take my oupie to the farm.. We dressed him nicely, got him in a wheelchair, combed his hair and rushed to get to the farm before Nana did.
I will NEVER forget the expression and emotion on Nana’s face when she walked into the living room to find her husband waiting for her on the couch. She basically ran over to him and kissed him as if they were back in Grade 8 again. We never thought it would ever be possible to have another Christmas with Oupie ever again..It was one of those moments that you’ll never be able to explain in words. You had to be there to experience the emotions in that room at that moment. Soon the tears were flowing again, but this time they were happy tears.. Such happy happy tears.
(I’m not a writer and English isn’t my 1st language, so please excuse the errors. Just wanted to share this very special memory with you!)
Lots of love,
Joe xoxo
